Feist - Let it Die

Wow! Feist....

So I heard a few songs on the radio (Gatekeeper, and Let it Die). I thought - she is truely impressive! I recommended her to Daniel, listened to the song Gatekeeper on a regular basis, but never bothered checking out the entire CD for some reason.

Now I'm sitting at Daniel's computer and noticed he downloaded the entire "Let it Die" CD. Wow - all songs are awesome (except Inside and Out is a little on the popy side). Her voice is the main attraction, but the instruments and grooves used show a fiiiine taste.

This is a "first listen" review... but my enjoyment of Gatekeeper doesn't seem to have faded much over time, so I don't expect anything different from the other songs.

Bob Dylan

I never really understood how people could enjoy listening to Bob Dylan. Now I don't understand why I'm starting to enjoy listening to him. I've downloaded some of his most popular songs and I'm slowly getting into it.

It took about 3 listens of the songs before I started enjoying the music... the repetativeness and length of some of the songs still annoys me a little. Maybe I'll get used to that too with time...

I like the lyrics even though I understand next to nothing. If he is trying to express confusion and strangeness, he's doing well :) if there's a deeper meaning, I'm missing out. I've tried looking up interpretations of some songs but couldn't find much. I'm still looking for a good "song meanings" site...

Maybe I'll write some more about Bob in a few months?

Joanna Newsom

She sounds like a 3-year-old! At first I thought "hmm this is strange", and I still kind of think that. But now I'm also thinking she's a lot like Bjork. Very strange at first then more enjoyable the more you listen to her.

The music is quite sparse, kind of like my favorite Bjork songs. Harp, very light arrangements. I think I'm already getting used to her voice, but it will probably take a few more listens for me to determine whether I actually like the music.

If you like Bjork, or strange folkish stuff, check her out! :)

No mp3 player :(

I won't have an mp3 player for about a month now :(

A while ago I dropped my iriver ifp-190... the joystick broke. But iriver didn't even ask any questions when I asked whether I could get a replacement! So now I'll send it in and hope that they'll mess up and send me a better one :) But until then my trips to the university and back will be very silent. My old Sony walkman is dead too. That's the problem with these fancy gadgets...

Me and my bros lookin handsome.

Willie Bobo

Fun music. Daniel sent me a few random Willie Bobo mp3s. Occasionally I just need some of this Latin/Soul crazyness. If you're looking for something along the lines of Buena Vista Social Club, Willie is a good place to go. A little less Cuban, a little more jazzy goove thing. I gotta improve my music lingo.

Ok - what's the meaning behind "Fried Neck Bones and some Homefries"? The song grooves, but I'd really like to know where that title came from.

The birth of Tasty Tunes

I've done personal websites... they come and go... the excitement of "anybody in the world will be able to read this" has passed... usually I get tired of updating them... and I realize nobody looks at them anyway... then I take them down. None of them were every really worth while (other than learning HTML and graphics). So I'm trying out this blogging thing instead hoping that it will be a little more fruitful.

The plan: talk about music I'm currently listening to. Provide links to info about artists I like... Nothing great, but something I hope I'll be motivated enough to keep up with.

I love music. And I love seeing others learn to appreciate the music I introduce them to.
